What is Legionella?
Legionella is a type of bacteria that is found in natural water sources (e.g. ponds, lakes and rivers), as well as purpose-built hot and cold water systems (e.g. spa pools, fountains and waterparks). Legionella can cause Legionnaires Disease when people breathe in tiny droplets of water that contain the bacteria.
The World Health Organization recommends that the concentration of Legionella in water be kept below 100 colony-forming units (CFUs) per millilitre (mL). However, even this level may be too high for some people, such as those who are immunocompromised. Carrying out water testing for Legionella can help you keep your water safe.

What are the first steps in preventing Legionella bacteria?
Where and when you find Legionella
Legionella bacteria can be found in a wide range of different water systems. That being said, it is most likely to be present if the water meets one or all of the following:
- The water temperature is maintained between 20°C and 45°C
- Has nutrients
- Is stagnant (i.e. not moving)
Some of the most common water systems that can be homes for Legionella bacteria include:
- Hot water tanks
- Cooling towers
- Domestic hot and cold water systems
- Hot tubs
- Showers
What’s the difference between Legionella testing and sampling?
How often should you carry out Legionella testing?
How often you carry out Legionella testing depends on the type of water system you have and the outcome of your Legionella Risk Assessment. Generally, though, you can follow these guidelines:
- Open systems (such as cooling towers or spa pools) should be tested at least quarterly, unless circumstances require more frequent sampling.
- Hot and cold water systems are not open to the elements and so have a lower risk of contamination. Because of this, monitoring the system isn’t always necessary, unless a risk assessment pulls up a concern.
What factors influence Legionella testing in Manchester?
Every building has its own unique water system and so, in certain environments, the risk for Legionella contamination is higher. In fact, different sectors and industries have their own factors to consider:
- Healthcare - Because places such as hospitals and care homes have complex water systems that serve vulnerable people, the risk for contamination and transmission is much higher.
- Hospitality - Large resorts or hotels often have hot tubs or even decorative fountains. Since these water systems are often stagnant and maintained at level temperatures, they are the perfect breeding ground for Legionella bacteria.
- Public facilities - Leisure centres or public swimming pools with warm water systems also provide ideal conditions for Legionella growth and so have a high risk for contamination.
No one wants to endanger public health, which is why it’s so important to keep on top of your Legionella water testing. Get in touch with our experts today for professional services and complete peace of mind.
